Nothing looks worse than costumes (or apparel) that appear homemade instead of custom. But pressing seams correctly can make all the difference in making a garment look professional. Perform each of these steps on every seam as you sew a garment. This  will make the seams lie flat and will take out most puckering that occurs from sewing seams. This technique may seem like a lot of extra work, but it is well worth the trouble for the finished result.

To get started, you’ll need an ironing board and an iron. Make sure your iron is set to the appropriate temperature for the fabric you’re working with, as pressing at the wrong temperature can cause the fabric to shrink or burn.

Flat seams

You should press each seam three times:

  1. Using a good steam iron, sandwich press the seam. (Press the seam flat as it was sewn.) Recommendations for a good steam iron can be found here.
  2. Open the seam or push all seam fabric to either side. Press from the wrong side of the fabric
  3. Flip the garment over. Use a pressing cloth (a clean old t-shirt will do, or a large square of white silk organza). Press seams from the right side.

Special seams

If you’re working with a seam that needs to be pressed to one side, lay the fabric with the seam facing up and press it flat. Then, use the tip of your iron to press the seam to one side. Use gentle but firm pressure. Be sure to work on the right side of the fabric. This will help to create a smooth and even finish.

To shape the seams, use a tailor’s ham or a rolled-up towel to help press the curves of the seam. Place the fabric on the ham or towel, with the seam facing up. Press down with your iron. This will help to shape the seam to your desired fit. It also creates a clean and polished look.

General information

One thing to keep in mind is to always use a pressing cloth if you’re working with delicate or sensitive fabrics. This will help to protect the fabric from direct heat. It also prevents the fabric from scorching or melting.

Overall, pressing seams is a quick and easy step that can make a big difference in the final result of your sewing project. So, take the time to do it right. Enjoy the satisfaction of a well-pressed garment!
